So, I am interested in this banjo that was posted a few days ago but have never heard of a Fred Martin version. Is this legit? New member selling. I searched all of the interweb but found nothing about Fred and Fairbanks.

I am trying to help a friend out with selling his Gibson banjo.
I know that these Gibsons are not very popular for obvious reasons but I have a few questions.
The serial # or FON is on peg head and is 419006 and it has Made in USA under the number.
Can someone tell me the first year that Gibson made the 2 pc flange, mahogany multiply rim banjos?
Fiddle peghead and leaves and bows ebony board.....The owner says it is a 1969 but I always thought that these started showing up in the 1970s.......can anyone enlighten me on this?
Thanks

276-18 A Little Banjo History and Memories

$

I was surfing YouTube this afternoon and was elated to see the first old Mastertone
I ever owned, The Henry Williams, being played and discussed by Charlie Cushman, and Tony, what a treat for me!
A few (not needed really) that differed from the memories of the current owner, that are in my memory. 276-18 was bought by me, more near 73-74 , than the 71 that Tony said was the year he had acquired it. I have the receipt somewhere where I paid him $900 for it. Had it been a flathead, my search would have ended before it even started, but it was a first step to others that came my way. I sold the banjo to banjo friend Terry Keener, so Tony is the fourth owner I assume? It’s a great, fine sounding banjo, 100% original five string, much like the Butch Robbins in Jim’s book. I still remember the almost tears look on Mr Williams face, as I left his porch near Martinsville Va, and how elated I was on the way home! I hope Tony doesn’t mind me posting this, and I would love to see it in person (are you listening Tony lol ) once more, what a fine old banjo! I will be near tears when my turn comes around.

One-Of-A-Kind banjo stolen…, Eastern Washington State, USA

Hey everyone I had this banjo stolen from my truck 2 days ago, it was a very nice banjo and one-of-a-kind. All-Vintage Parts. It said “Elaine” at the top, case is black and scratched up on side, and red interior. Weights over 20 lbs I believe. I am located in eastern Washington State, in a place where this is not common. Hopefully I can get it back someday, unless it gets put away in someone’s basement for another 30 years. I was very happy to have it. Crime has surged recently with economic desperation and many people are being disenfranchised from society. A sizeable chunck of these people are not good people, and let’s say they were just shy of moral normalcy anyway, but now have little to fear and petty thieves have become very emboldened lately. California has basically sanctioned theft… amounts under $1,000 decriminalized and police will not even respond, it is considered par to jay-walking. They will literally tell you to stop wasting their time. Be safe out there and get out of the urban areas, society is crumbling and you don’t want to be around when these lunatics on drugs become more desperate.

Stolen Banjo, One-of-a-kind “Elaine”

Hey everyone I had this banjo stolen from my Truck 2 days ago, In eastern Washington State, USA. It is a one-of-a-kind banjo I recently got 2 months ago, in Eugene. It is easily 20 lbs, no serial number, professionally hand-made, and all-vintage parts. The case is black on the outside with scratches on the side of it. Hoping to find it somewhere, someday, unless it sits in someone’s garage for another 30 years. Not in a bad neighborhood but the economy recently is causing much desperation. Keep an eye out, I think these things tend to travel far when lost…

I LOVE old time records. Nothing beats the 12" format: big art, interesting or obscure writing, and small pressings. Old Time on Spotify or, heaven forbid, a CD just ain't the same.

I'd love to see what people have. Show them off! I'll start:

Could you help me with this Banjo

Hello, I have just been given this Banjo from a friend. All I know about this instrument is that it was owned and Played by a Mummer , and it's supposed to be from the 50's ??
I am not a Banjo player and have very little knowledge of them, but I am a guitar player and would be willing to fix this up for my own personal use.

It says Kingston on the headstock but I can't find much on it..

The SN# 34857 but with no other identifying marks...

So My questions are
1 is this worth fixing up ?
(The neck appears to be very straight) and what around what would that cost at a good banjo repair shop.
2, Does anyone have any info on what I have ? Origin, date, quality of the manufacturer..
Well hopefully someone tells me it's worth it to get it playing right.
I'll be excited to venture into this..

Thanks for your time, Robbob

Who do you think made this banjo for Wurlitzer?

I'd like to hear your thoughts on who made this banjo and possibly when.

Note that the head stock was cut out with the saw cuts perpendicular to the front of the peghead rather than perpendicular to the plane of the fingerboard. This is the first time I ever noticed that.

Broken Bolt on Jimmie Edwards Abbott(?) Banjo

Can't believe it's well over 3 years since I got this banjo. (http://www.banjohangout.org/archive/340759). Since then, Dave Stacey, a very close neighbour and a gentleman, has helped me re-fret the instrument and given me advice.

Unfortunately, I over-tightened one of the bolts and it broke.  No luck in repairing it and I can't find anything similar off-the-shelf.  The bolt shaft is 1.15 inches long, of which thread length is 0.7".  The height of the hex head is 0.23" and the hex diagonal is 0.32".  We believe the pitch is 3/16th BSW.

Anyone have one lying around they don't need?  A long shot I know but any help appreciated.  I'm UK based.

Thanks

I have been very blessed!
I have found myself as the owner of stagorn 3345. I am looking for history on it.
It was made for Alison Brown in 1988. During this time she was playing with Alison Krauss. I have found some videos of her playing it with Krauss. It is easy to identify, as it has an engraved tail, but everything else is unengraved. She also used this banjo to record her album "Simple pleasures". The banjo is featured on the back of the CD. Thats all I know about it.
I would think it was used to record the "Ive got that old feeling" album with Krauss, but I cant confirm. Can anyone else?
Does anyone know when she stopped playing it?

Bob Rock one on only banjo hand painted with his permission

I bought this banjo for my brother roughly around 1980 and acquired the permission of Bob Rock to allow us to photograph him in his shop and had that then hand painted on the back of the banjo that I gave my brother along with my parents for his birthday I believe that was in July 1980. Can anyone tell me if there is another that exist or what the value might be of this banjo I will post pictures when I have them. I believe this is the only banjo ever produced by Bob rock that actually has him painted on the back of the banjo in his shop should be extremely rare

A friend here in NZ has messaged me with a photo of this banjo. I have dated it via its serial no. It looks all original with metal friction peg and Kluson tuners. Comes with a case. All looks in good condition. Can any one offer a ball park figure of worth?

Just bought a SS Stewart open-back

I just bought a SS Stewart at an estate sale. I would love some help identifying what model it is, what year it was made, and anything else of interest.

  • 19-inch neck (nut to rim)
  • 11-inch pot
  • 27-inch scale
  • serial # 8484
  • Grover tuners
  • Grover Vibrator

Then neck was broken and repaired. It looks messy but seems solid. There's a chunk of the fingerboard missing between the first and second fret - I don't think it will affect playability.

It needs to be cleaned up, a new head, and a new nut... All stuff I feel like I can do as a guitar repair guy. That said, I will probably ask many questions in the Building, Setup, and Repair section...

I took too many photos to attach, so this link should lead to a shared album: https://photos.app.goo.gl/eLGL82nr1pYKoFac9
